Draw a breath through your mouth while turning your head to one side. Lifting your head straight up is not a good idea.
Kick your legs from the hips while keeping your knees straight. Kick as quickly as you can while making the tiniest splashes possible. You should not take your feet out of the pool. Beneath the water, exhale, turn your head, and take a new breath. Continue kicking and inhaling until you are able to breathe comfortably while kicking.
Perfection Comes With Practice!
Continue kicking while making intense strokes with each hand, dragging each hand back until the palm is at your side before reaching ahead to strike with the other arm. Put two strokes with each arm, move your head and take a breath, then straighten your head and repeat. Practice until you are comfortable with your breathing and can swim the entire length of the pool without stopping.
